Exams & Dental Cleanings

Exams and dental cleanings are central to comprehensive oral health care — they’re regular maintenance that nobody should go without. At Children’s Dentistry, we want to periodically look at how your child’s teeth are developing, cleaning off the built-up plaque and tartar that we find while they’re in our chair.

Don’t worry; everyone will enjoy their trip to the dentist for a routine exam and cleaning. Children’s Dentistry makes sure interactions with patients are fun, and our modern conveniences ensure both parent and child have a wonderful experience at our office.

Regular Visits Are the Best Preventive Treatment

dental exams and dental cleaningsFor the most part, children need exams and dental cleanings once every six months. This guideline may vary, depending on the specific oral health needs of your child. If children struggle with repeated instances of cavities, we may want to see them more often. But as a general rule, children (and adults) should plan on coming to the dentist twice a year to get their teeth professionally cleaned and to make sure they’re healthy.

Dental Cleanings Come First

The visit will start with a cleaning. Before we do anything, we make sure your child knows what to expect. We explain what we’re about to do so they won’t be surprised.

We use our dental tools to gently remove all the plaque, tartar and bacteria that may be built up along the gumline and in between teeth. Even the most effective tooth-brusher can’t get rid of all plaque, but we can. By eliminating plaque and tartar, we are protecting the tooth enamel from acid erosion and lowering the chance that your child will develop a cavity.

Next, we polish their teeth, then brush and floss. After the final rinse, their smile will be squeaky clean, and the dentist will be ready to examine them.

Exams Are Revealing

We take exams seriously — it’s our chance to look at each tooth and check the surfaces for any signs of decay. We also check the gums, since they’re an important part of overall dental health. If we notice anything during our exam, we will talk to the parent and explain our findings to the child. We may treat the issue right away, or we may need to set up a time for your family to come back again a different day.

Stay Relaxed During the Visit

With our entertaining staff talking with your child throughout their cleaning and exam, the whole checkup will go by before they realize it! And parents can relax too — you can sit with your children if they feel more comfortable with you nearby, or connect to our office Wi-Fi to catch up on emails. At Children’s Dentistry, we place the well-being of our patients and their parents front and center.
